Add the 1% water, baking soda and vanilla extract.

Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and mix until combined.

Pour into the large saucepan and cook over medium heat for 1 1 1 /2 minutes, stirring frequently.

When your mixture is hot, reduce the heat to low and let simmer for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

While the bread mixture simmers, combine the egg, butter and sugar in a small saucepan.

Cook for about 3 minutes, whisking constantly.

The mixture will thicken, and you will notice a thin, creamy white foam forming on the bottom of the pan.

Add more butter as needed to make the mixture thicker and thicker.

Remove the mixture and let cool.
